A warm, wonderful telling of her grandmother's quest as a young woman and her life on the family farm in the early 1900's, becoming a teacher and being involved in current affairs of the day woven around historical events. Sharon Atkins, genealogist, wrote an interesting tale of a young woman's journey from young student to experienced teacher. Sharon uses the writing technique which keeps the narration in the present tense even during flashbacks; the narrator shares her past story with her beau. I think this will interest younger readers from preteens to young adults who have an interest in historical tales. I would read it again and recommend it to the correct audiences.
A thought provoking history of Hazel's growth and maturation into an exceptional teacher and confident woman. Although her diaries do not reveal a great deal about her fears and emotions, Hazel gives the reader insight into family life on a farm in New York in the early decades of the 20th Century. Hazel's desire to divulge her formative years, via the diaries, to a future husband is commendable.
Farm life was very different then. While today's children may pass the time on cell phones and other electronic devices, Hazel had daily chores that required her complete attention if the family was to survive.
Atkins' book will be of interest to family historians and anyone researching American life in the early 20th Century.
I love history, and this is a warm, enthralling book that takes you straight into the heart of what it was like to be a woman at the beginning of the 20th Century. Atkins takes her grandmother's handwritten letters and transforms them for the reader into a lovely, graceful story taking us through her childhood as a farmgirl, through World War I, and the devastating flu epidemic of that era. Compare this to the stories of Katherine Ann Porter, and Atkins does not fail to measure up. I recommend the book to anyone interested in history, in challengers women have faced, or in love.
I was impressed by how the author made such a detailed, heartfelt story just from a few sets of short journal entities. She really brought her family history alive (while weaving in general history like the fight for women's suffrage). By the end, I felt like I Hazel and I could've been friends in real life because I knew her so well (and liked her so much). The photos in the back of the book allowed me to bask in the afterglow of the story while admiring some very special visuals; what a treat!
As a teacher and fan of researching family history, I enjoyed reading With A Heart For Any Fate. The author has brought her grandmother Hazel's handwritten journal entries to life in this account of what it was like to be a young woman fulfilling aspirations to be a school teacher. I was fascinated by the amount of study and preparation, not to mention the multiple examinations required to realize the dream of teaching in the early 1900s. Bits of history such as women earning the right to vote and the role of US citizens during World War I add dimension to the account of Hazel's years as a young woman. With warmth, the author tells her grandmother's story in the form of a conversation between her grandmother and her beau, Carlton, as she keeps him anticipating her answer with regard to his proposal of marriage. If you have an interest in early 1900 women's history, you will enjoy With a Heart For Any Fate by Sharon S. Atkins.
